The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics have been adopted by 43 states and the District of Columbia. The Standards are not the curriculum, but provide guidelines for schools to design curricula in order for students to develop complex problem-solving skills. In fact, the textbooks often only show one way to solve complex problems by teaching computation rather than how to learn the math and why the math works the way it does.

In California at least 3.2 million students will participate in state testing. This is a challenging time for teachers, administrators, and our students. Testing brings up so many thoughts and feelings for everyone and takes over all that we do in school until it is complete.

Separation anxiety disorder is a condition in which a child becomes fearful and nervous when away from home or separated from a loved one -- usually a parent or other caregiver -- to whom the child is attached.

Each year in April, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and students in practice, education, research, and science host a month long celebration showcasing the importance of Occupational Therapy.

It’s a day dedicated to placing autism at the forefront of everyone’s mind and bringing awareness to the millions of individuals across the globe touched by autism daily.

“Reward students for what is expected of them? I don’t think so. I want my students to be intrinsically motivated.” This is a common conversation heard when discussing rewards, reinforcers, and acknowledgement systems. However, brain research supports the concept that rewards play a vital role in how we learn, retain information and replicate behaviors.
