The Alternate Pathway to a Diploma is a program for students with disabilities who meet certain criteria. The program is designed to help students earn a high school diploma.

In California, all students work toward a diploma by completing the statewide course of study set out in California Education Code section 51225.31 (English, math, science, social sciences, VAPA/world language/CTE, and PE). Districts may add local requirements, but the state minimums are defined in law.

Alternate Pathway to a Diploma (for students who take the CAA)

California created an alternate pathway to a high school diploma for a small group of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities—those whose IEP teams designate the California Alternate Assessment (CAA). Under California Education Code section 51225.31, these students:

  • Must complete the state course requirements in section 51225.31 (aligned to alternate achievement standards),

  • Are exempt from any additional local coursework requirements, and

  • Must be awarded a diploma once they meet the state requirements.
This pathway does not end a student’s right to special education (FAPE) through age 22, and students may participate in graduation ceremonies with peers.
