October is National Bullying Prevention Month: Building Safe & Supportive School Communities

Each October, schools across the nation unite to raise awareness during National Bullying Prevention Month. At the Desert Mountain SELPA, we believe every student deserves to learn in an environment that is safe, supportive, and free from bullying. Bullying can affect a student’s academic performance, emotional well-being, and sense of belonging, and it takes a whole-school approach to prevent it.

Why Bullying Prevention Matters

Bullying is more than just conflict. It’s repeated, unwanted, and intentional aggressive behavior involving a real or perceived power imbalance. Addressing it early and consistently helps foster positive relationships, promotes inclusivity, and ensures that students feel safe and valued.

A one-time assembly or single lesson will not effectively prevent bullying. Successful prevention requires an ongoing campaign or a series of lessons that build awareness, teach skills, and promote preventive actions throughout the school year. Below are some helpful strategies for educators and leadership teams to implement and consider as they strengthen Tier 1 practices to enhance support for all students.

Practical Tips for School Staff and Teams

  1. Set Clear Expectations for Behavior
    • Collaboratively develop and post a school-wide behavior matrix that includes respect, kindness, and inclusion.
    • Teach and model these expectations regularly across settings.
  2. Act Quickly and Consistently
    • Respond to bullying immediately and consistently.
    • Use restorative practices to help students reflect, repair harm, and rebuild relationships.
  3. Empower Bystanders
    • Teach students how to speak up safely, support peers, and report incidents.
    • Recognize and praise students when they demonstrate ally behaviors.
  4. Build Relationships Every Day
    • Greet students by name and check in regularly.
    • Strong connections between staff and students are a proven protective factor against bullying.
  5. Integrate Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Practices
    • Use SEL lessons to teach empathy, perspective-taking, and problem-solving.
    • Recognize positive peer interactions as part of your MTSS/PBIS acknowledgement system.
  6. Engage Families and Community Partners
    • Share prevention strategies and resources with families so the message is reinforced at home.
    • Partner with community organizations for events, assemblies, and campaigns.
