The first day of school jitters, the nervousness of the unknown, the excitement that a new adventure brings. If you read the first line and said “YES, that’s me!” you are not the only one. Whether it is your first year working with students, you are a pro-educator in your fifteenth year, or a well-seasoned veteran teacher in your twenty-ninth year as well as, administrators, support staff, students, and even parents get these same feelings as a new school year begins. The first day of school triggers a sense of anxiousness. You may seem cool and calm on the outside, but on the inside you are a bundle of nerves… this is happening to everyone around you as well.

Yes, everyone around you is just as nervous, anxious, or excited for what this school year will bring. Here are some ways to keep the energy of the first day alive in every school and classroom. These simple routines will help your students be successful in the classroom and around campus.

Creating a safe and welcoming environment in our schools

  • Establish routines.
  • Be consistent.
  • Model the behavior you want your students to see.
  • Expectations, short and sweet for greater student success.
  • Be prepared for the day.

Creating a positive work environment for yourself

  • Do something for yourself from time to time.
  • Prepare your wardrobe for the week.
  • Plan and prepare a healthy-yummy lunch.
  • Go to bed at a reasonable time.
  • Create a calm atmosphere for yourself in your workspace.
  • Play energetic and motivational music to set the tone for the day. You can also play music as the students enter the classroom to help them create a positive day at school.
  • Find a positive support system to help when a challenge arises. Do not wait until you are overwhelmed to seek help.
  • Reflect on how the day went. Celebrate every little success; the “Blessings” you get in helping to shape and mold a young mind.

This is a new journey, an adventure, a new start. There will be some bumps in the road, there always are and that’s okay. Those bumps are teachable moments. Moments you as an educator can use to shape the life of another human being. These moments, the good and the bad, will fill your days leading to one amazing year!

At CAHELP we would like to extend our warmest wishes to you on the beginning of a New Academic Year. Let this school year be interesting and unusual for you as you let it bring new knowledge, discoveries, and new challenges. Make the learning environments come to life through positive adult/student relationships, engaging lessons, with passionate and inspiring educators.
