Celebrate Read Across America: The Science of Reading & Family Resources
March 2025
March is here, and that means it's time to celebrate Read Across America! This annual event encourages children and families to embrace the joy of reading while highlighting its importance for lifelong learning. This month, we are focusing on the Science of Reading—a research-based approach that helps children develop strong literacy skills.
What is the Science of Reading?
The Science of Reading is a body of research that explains how the brain learns to read. It emphasizes five key components:
- Phonemic Awareness – Understanding and manipulating sounds in words.
- Phonics – Connecting sounds to letters to decode words.
- Fluency – Reading smoothly with accuracy, speed, and expression.
- Vocabulary – Building word knowledge and meaning.
- Comprehension – Understanding and making meaning from text.
By using evidence-based strategies, we can support children in becoming confident, capable readers!
How Can Families Support Literacy at Home?
Here are a few simple ways to encourage reading at home:
- Read Aloud Daily – Reading together fosters a love for books and improves language skills.
- Ask Questions – Engage in discussions about the story to enhance comprehension.
- Play with Sounds – Rhyming games, Music that includes rhyming such as nursery rhymes or Rap, and word puzzles help develop phonemic awareness.
- Create a Print-Rich Environment – Keep books, labels, and written words visible at home.
- Be a Reading Role Model – Show your child that reading is enjoyable by sharing your own reading experiences.
